Olha lá vai passando a procissão, Se arrastando que nem cobra pelo chão

Look there they go, the procession, it’s creeping like a snake through the ground.

As pessoas que nela vão passando, Acreditam nas coisas lá do céu

The people going pass, they believe in those things in heaven.

As mulheres cantando tiram versos, Os homens escutando tiram o chapéu

The women singing, they take out their verses. The men listening they take out the hat.

Eles vivem pensando aqui na terra, Esperando o que Jesus prometeu

They live thinking here on Earth, hoping on what Jesus promised.

E Jesus prometeu vida melhor, Pra quem vive nesse mundo sem amor

And Jesus promised a better life, to those whom live in a world without love.

Só depois de entregar o corpo ao chão, Só depois de morrer neste sertão

Only after the body’s in the ground, Only after it dies in this backland.

Eu também tôdo lado de Jesus, Só que acho que ele se esqueceu

I too am on Jesus’s side, only I think he forgot

De dizer que na terra a gente tem, De arranjar um jeitinho pra viver

To say, that in this land, people have to find a little way to live

Muita gente se arvora a ser Deus, E promete tanta coisa pro sertão

Many people, only want to be uplifted to God, and promise some much for the backland.

Que vai dar um vestido pra Maria, E promete um roçado pro João

That they are going to give a dress to Maria, and promise to clear new ground for João.

Entra ano, sai ano, e nada vem, Meu sertão continua ao deus-dará

Year in and year out, and nothing comes, my backland goes on, God willing.

Mas se existe Jesus no firmamento, Cá na terra isto tem que se acabar

But, if Jesus exist in the heavens, it’s here on this Earth, that we end.
